Preparing for IVF with donor egg

Donor egg IVF is a type of treatment using Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART) primarily offered to patients suffering from low-to-zero egg count or having weak chances to  their own eggs due to the age factor. Habitual miscarriage is also among indications to egg donor IVF.

In this article we’ll shed some light on the important aspects of such programs.

Understanding IVF with Donor Eggs

Having an IVF with an egg donor may sound confusing at first. However, the procedure is simple at its core. A screened and approved female passes egg retrieval following ovarian stimulation and donates her eggs to a recipient. Depending on the patient’s individual situation, the clinic may fertilize donor eggs with either partner or donor sperm.

Among all current fertility treatment options, egg donation success rates are considered to be the highest. Positive pregnancy test is expected in up to 74% of euploid embryo transfer cycles following donor egg IVF.

At NGC, we provide access to authentic and detailed donor profiles with pictures included and put you in control of donor selection. Contact us for treatment approval and donor matching assistance. Our team will help you choose the right egg donor, get pregnant fast and give birth to a healthy baby.

Initial Steps and Planning

The treatment starts with a careful review of the patient’s medical situation. NGC follows the legislation that forbids providing donor egg treatment to all patients seeking it. Instead, the doctor should determine whether there are medical indications, and whether the patient (or recipient) is fit to have fertility treatment.

Medical Preparations

Treatment using ART requires several screenings, and there are connection points between the one peculiar to the donor and the other that the patients take. We will focus on the recipient’s check-up, but you may find out about donor health screenings from our other article.

Required medical tests

It is essential to assess the patient’s anamnesis prior to confirming treatment. Even if the patient’s lifestyle is healthy and there are no illnesses in the background, standardized check-ups must take place.

Health screening

We always ask our patients to provide the following information:

  • Fertility journals. Having the information about treatment received in the past helps us adapt and tailor our treatment schemes
  • Pelvic scan. A detailed report with a description and measurements of ovaries, uterus allows us to determine whether additional treatment should take place prior to embryo transfer
  • Breast scan or mammogram. Depending on the patient’s age, we ask our patients to provide one of these reports
  • Pap smear. It is necessary to confirm the absence of pathological cell division in the cervix
  • Lung X-ray. Checking the respiratory system is yet another important step before a pregnancy
  • GP report. Referring to a general health practitioner prior to embryo transfer is important. If the patient takes some medicines daily or has an underlying health condition, the fertility doctor must be aware of that. It helps manage treatment properly

Medications overview

The medications the patients are to take to prepare for an embryo transfer include hormones like progesterone and estrogen to support the uterine lining and early pregnancy. Folic acid is a recommended general supplement.

Timeline expectations

Once the embryos have been created and screened for genetic abnormalities (or once the synchronization of menstrual cycles between the egg donor and recipient kicks in), the doctor starts preparing the patient’s endometrium according to their menstrual cycle. An ultrasound is made on Day 1-2, Day 9-10 of preparation and on the embryo transfer procedure day.

Choosing Your Donor

The timeline for donor egg IVF varies depending on the availability of the candidates short-listed from our database < https://database.ngc.clinic/en/> and the patient’s own schedule. We ask our patients to first arrive for a consultation which may be combined with fresh donor egg fertilization or sperm freezing for subsequent IVF. On average, the process from initial consultation to embryo transfer takes approximately 2-3 months.

Selection criteria

Donors are selected based on the patient’s individual preferences that may include blood type, similarities in facial and bodily features etc. Physical characteristics, educational background, and personal interests may also be considered to match the recipient’s preferences.

Our team actively assists by checking the donor’s participation record. We always advise if one of the candidates should be prioritized.

Donor screening process

All NGC donors are verified according to Decree #803-N issued by the Russian Ministry of Health. It is mandatory to review each donor’s medical history, genetics and psychological wellbeing alongside such essentials as serological and STD tests.

Legal considerations

Recipient family’s privacy is fully protected by the Russian legislation. The donor cannot make claims regarding the children born thanks to her eggs, request custody or search contact.

 Making your decision

Deciding to go ahead and start a donation program is a moment of great vulnerability. The team of NGC has set the goal to make the process as efficient and risk-free as possible. We understand that IVF with donor egg is a big investment, from both the financial and emotional standpoint. Together, we work with you to make everything happen and bring the joys of parenthood.

Treatment Preparation Steps

Cycle synchronization

The recipient’s menstrual cycle is synchronized with the donor’s cycle using hormonal medications. This ensures the endometrium is ready for embryo transfer when the donor’s eggs are retrieved and fertilized. An important downside is the impossibility of genetic testing. PGT-A can be conducted only for the cohort of embryos left after the initial transfer.

Endometrial preparation

The patient usually takes estrogen and progesterone. This combination of drugs helps prepare for your embryo transfer by thickening the endometrium and improving its structure. When the uterine environment is fully ready, the procedure is carried out within an implantation window determined by the fertility specialist.

Medication schedule

A detailed treatment plan is provided by our fertility specialist. We outline when to take hormones, supplements and other prescribed drugs. Adherence to this schedule, as well as ultrasounds made timely, are important for the successful implantation.

Transfer timing

In HRT-regulated (hormone replacement therapy) cycles, fresh embryo transfer (or frozen embryo transfer) normally happens after 5 days of progesterone intake when the endometrium is at its peak receptivity. The procedure is painless and does not require anesthesia or bed rest. The patient is free to leave the country on the same or the following day

Conclusion

Donor egg IVF is a viable option for individuals facing challenges with their own eggs. With careful planning, thorough medical preparations, and the right support, this treatment can offer hope for achieving a successful pregnancy. By adding PGT-A of embryos, patients can additionally increase the chance of getting pregnant.

FAQs

How long before I start preparing my body?

Depending on the patient’s individual medical needs, the preparation may take 1 month or more. If general health and gynecological screenings are normal, embryo transfer can be planned as soon as you have euploid embryos.

What dietary and lifestyle changes are recommended during preparation?

Adequate rest and moderate physical activity paired with a healthy diet are enough to improve your chances.

How can partners be involved in the preparation process?

Your partner should lead a healthy lifestyle as good sperm quality directly contributes to normal fertilization and successful embryo transfer. We recommend that you stop smoking, drinking alcohol at least 1 month before egg fertilization. Implementing a balanced diet, diminishing caffeine intake and maintaining a healthy work-rest ratio are other steps we recommend considering.

What support services are available during the preparation phase?

We are confident that communication quality is crucial when planning IVF abroad. For 10 years NGC has been providing IVF treatment, and we have been committed to helping every patient pass the rollercoaster of emotions attached to treatment with donor eggs. Our medical and admin teams are always there to help you.

How does the preparation timeline differ from traditional IVF?

In fact, there are not many dissimilarities. The timings for own egg IVF with PGT-A and donor egg IVF with PGT-A can be almost identical provided the egg donor is able to begin a cycle without further waiting. Frozen embryo transfer (FET cycle) preparations typically take 20 days.
