Step-by-step process of IVF with donor eggs

Infertility specialists use donor reproductive cells to help people who have problems conceiving become parents. In reproductive medicine, in vitro fertilization or IVF has long been a common procedure.

Anyone who cannot conceive using own eggs will receive qualified help after contacting the NGC fertility clinic. The main advice is not to lose heart and confidently move towards your goal.

Accurate assessment of the patient's condition

First, our patients consult with the clinic’s medical team remotely. All preliminary examinations are carried out and sent to NGC’s doctor for a review prior the actual visit. An online consultation is provided free of charge.

The patient's problems are always studied carefully.

  • The gynecological condition should be thoroughly assessed by ultrasound.
  • The uterus, endometrium and ovarian function should be checked.
  • The male partner has to provide a spermogram.

When our specialists see that there is no point in trying to use own eggs, we prescribe IVF with donor eggs.

If the partner's sperm cannot be used, donor sperm will be offered to fertilize the eggs.

Note. In regular IVF, children inherit half of their genes from their mother and father. If donor eggs are used, the baby will still be genetically related to the male partner, while the female partner will carry the pregnancy, additionally making an impact on gene expression.

Choosing an egg donor

After the online consultation, the patients choose their egg donor. Fully suitable and interesting options can be found and reviewed in the clinic’s online database

We pay maximum attention to the choice of a donor. Donors at the NGC clinic are fully medically vetted. Physical parameters, lifestyle, hobbies, interests, values, education and many other facts about each donor along with child and adult pictures can be found in our detailed donor profiles.

The donor selection service is individual and is adjusted to the needs of the participants in in vitro fertilization. Due to the absence of a waiting list and the constant acceptance of new donors, suitable candidates are offered within a few weeks. Even if you have to wait, such a period is not long.

NGC clinic make sure to minimize waiting time and provides only reliable donor options. All individual wishes and necessities are taken into account by the coordinator.

Donor database review

Access to the database of NGC’s donors is provided. A suitable candidate is selected.

Screening prior the program

The donor undergoes a follow-up ultrasound and renews her medical tests. They will confirm that she is ready to participate in a new program.

Anonymity and confidentiality

Donation of donor material is carried out anonymously. This protects personal information. The patient and the donor remain unknown to each other

Egg retrieval and fertilization

The procedure is performed by well-trained IVF specialists with extensive practical experience.

Ovarian stimulation

After selecting a donor, the IVF cycle begins. At this stage, ovarian stimulation is carried out. It is necessary to stimulate the ovaries to produce a larger number of mature eggs compared to the natural menstrual cycle.

The donor takes fertility drugs daily for two weeks. Every 3-4 days, ultrasound scans are performed. Blood tests are taken to monitor the condition of the follicles. Once the follicles have reached the desired size, a “trigger injection” is given. The injected hormone starts the process of full maturation of the eggs.

Collection of donor eggs

36 hours after the trigger injection, the donor’s eggs are collected. The procedure usually lasts up to 20-30 minutes. To reduce discomfort, the donor is given anesthesia. The fertility doctor carefully inserts a needle through the vaginal wall into each ovarian follicle. The needle is connected to a suction device that draws fluid out of the follicles along with the mature eggs. The embryologist then analyzes the collected fluid in the lab to identify and extract the mature eggs. The egg collection process is monitored at every stage by reproductive specialists. This ensures a positive outcome for the upcoming stage of in vitro fertilization.

  • Competent stimulation of the donor's ovaries makes it possible to obtain mature high-quality eggs.

  • Ultrasound is used to control the egg retrieval operation.

Egg fertilization

Our patients can travel for fertilization of donor eggs with fresh sperm, or come in advance to deposit a frozen sperm sample.

Fertilization of the egg is performed in the laboratory. An embryologist takes mature and viable eggs and fertilizes them with sperm. The sperm may be provided by the recipient's partner, the intended parent, or a sperm donor. 16-20 hours after fertilization, the embryologist checks which egg has developed into an embryo and how many there are. The selected embryo remains in this environment for up to seven days to monitor their development and quality.

Embryo transfer

The embryo that has reached the required stage of development is transferred to the uterus or cryopreserved. The time of transfer depends on the type of transfer:

  1. Fresh implantation. The embryo is transferred shortly after fertilization, on the 5th day after egg collection. The recipient's menstrual cycle is synchronized with the egg donor's cycle.

  2. Frozen transfer. The embryo is frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen. Then it is defrosted and transferred taking into account the recipient's menstrual cycles. The embryo is transferred using a thin catheter controlled by ultrasound.

After fresh or frozen embryos are transferred, the recipient does not experience discomfort and leads a normal life. The clinic prescribes hormonal drugs to support the uterine mucosa and facilitate embryo implantation. Do not forget about rest, spend more time outdoors to support your body.

Pregnancy test

10 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is performed to check how successful the IVF was. A blood test is performed to determine the level of hCG and confirm pregnancy. If the dynamics are positive, the recipient continues to monitor the pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the clinic will carefully review the protocol and the results of the IVF cycle and choose the next steps.
