Step-by-step process of IVF with donor eggs

After selecting a donor, the IVF cycle begins. At this stage, ovarian stimulation is carried out. It is necessary to stimulate the ovaries to produce a larger number of mature eggs compared to the natural menstrual cycle.
The donor takes fertility drugs daily for two weeks. Every 3-4 days, ultrasound scans are performed. Blood tests are taken to monitor the condition of the follicles. Once the follicles have reached the desired size, a “trigger injection” is given. The injected hormone starts the process of full maturation of the eggs.
36 hours after the trigger injection, the donor’s eggs are collected. The procedure usually lasts up to 20-30 minutes. To reduce discomfort, the donor is given anesthesia. The fertility doctor carefully inserts a needle through the vaginal wall into each ovarian follicle. The needle is connected to a suction device that draws fluid out of the follicles along with the mature eggs. The embryologist then analyzes the collected fluid in the lab to identify and extract the mature eggs. The egg collection process is monitored at every stage by reproductive specialists. This ensures a positive outcome for the upcoming stage of in vitro fertilization.
- Competent stimulation of the donor's ovaries makes it possible to obtain mature high-quality eggs.

Our patients can travel for fertilization of donor eggs with fresh sperm, or come in advance to deposit a frozen sperm sample.
Fertilization of the egg is performed in the laboratory. An embryologist takes mature and viable eggs and fertilizes them with sperm. The sperm may be provided by the recipient's partner, the intended parent, or a sperm donor. 16-20 hours after fertilization, the embryologist checks which egg has developed into an embryo and how many there are. The selected embryo remains in this environment for up to seven days to monitor their development and quality.
The embryo that has reached the required stage of development is transferred to the uterus or cryopreserved. The time of transfer depends on the type of transfer:
- Fresh implantation. The embryo is transferred shortly after fertilization, on the 5th day after egg collection. The recipient's menstrual cycle is synchronized with the egg donor's cycle.
- Frozen transfer. The embryo is frozen and stored in liquid nitrogen. Then it is defrosted and transferred taking into account the recipient's menstrual cycles. The embryo is transferred using a thin catheter controlled by ultrasound.
After fresh or frozen embryos are transferred, the recipient does not experience discomfort and leads a normal life. The clinic prescribes hormonal drugs to support the uterine mucosa and facilitate embryo implantation. Do not forget about rest, spend more time outdoors to support your body.
10 days after the embryo transfer, a pregnancy test is performed to check how successful the IVF was. A blood test is performed to determine the level of hCG and confirm pregnancy. If the dynamics are positive, the recipient continues to monitor the pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the clinic will carefully review the protocol and the results of the IVF cycle and choose the next steps.
