Your Guide to the Oocyte Donation Process

Published: 22 September 2024

Modern reproductive medicine offers hopeful solutions for individuals and couples facing infertility. When pregnancy with one's own eggs is not medically feasible—or after repeated IVF attempts have not succeeded—egg donation can provide a safe, effective pathway to building a family.

Every patient deserves clear information, respectful care, and evidence-based options. This guide explains how egg donation works, who it may help, and what to expect when considering treatment as a recipient.

When Egg Donation Is The Right Treatment

Egg donation may be recommended when a patient cannot use their own eggs due to medical, genetic, or age-related factors. It is often considered when:

  • Ovarian function is diminished or absent – including premature ovarian insufficiency or natural menopause
  • Advanced reproductive age – typically over 40, when egg quality and quantity decline significantly
  • Recurrent IVF challenges – such as repeated embryo arrest, implantation failure, or pregnancy loss
  • Genetic concerns – when there is a known hereditary condition that could be passed to a child
  • Unexplained infertility – after thorough evaluation and multiple unsuccessful treatment cycles

Patient's First Step: The Initial Consultation

Treatment with donor eggs begins with a confidential conversation with a fertility physician. During an online consultation, a patient-oriented clinic will:

  • Review your medical history and reproductive goals
  • Confirm clinical eligibility based on local regulations and medical indications
  • Recommend any pre-treatment tests or screenings to complete beforehand
  • Help interpret recent results (e.g., semen analysis, hormone panels)
  • Discuss available treatment packages and timelines tailored to your schedule

If you're unsure whether donor eggs align with your situation, our specialists can help clarify your options during a personalized consultation. Our team welcomes you to submit an overview of your medical case by using our patient submission form.

How Egg Donation Works: A Step-by-Step Overview For Recipients

  1. Donor Matching – Choose a donor from the verified database of fully screened donors based on your preferences (photographs and physical traits, medical history, personality and background)
  2. Cycle Coordination – Align your visit for sperm collection with the donor's stimulation cycle
  3. Fertilization & Embryo Development – Donor eggs are fertilized with partner or donor sperm via IVF/ICSI; embryos are cultured to the blastocyst stage
  4. Genetic Testing – PGT-A screening is advised to international patients as identifying chromosomally normal embryos may help achieve pregnancy faster
  5. Embryo Transfer – One embryo is transferred to your uterus in a brief, minimally invasive procedure
  6. Pregnancy Support – Ongoing monitoring and hormonal support to sustain healthy pregnancy development

Fresh vs. Frozen: Choosing the Right Approach

For the highest embryo yield and developmental potential, fresh donor egg cycles are often preferred. An international fertility clinic will offer flexible scheduling to accommodate patients:

  • Option to freeze sperm in advance or provide a fresh sample on retrieval day
  • Coordination of travel for the 4–5 day transfer window, with remote monitoring beforehand

Frozen donor egg can be suggested to patients who prioritize scheduling flexibility. Clinical team and treatment coordinator will help you weigh the benefits of each approach based on your goals.

Legal Protections & Privacy

Russian legislation provides clear safeguards for all parties involved in egg donation:

  • Confidentiality: Donor and recipient identities are protected by law
  • Parental Rights: The birth mother is the sole legal parent. Donors waive all parental rights, custody claims, and future contact obligations upon signing the donation agreement
  • Open ID Option: While donation is anonymous by default, we also offer non-anonymous (Open ID) programs for patients who wish to allow their child the possibility of contacting the donor upon reaching adulthood (age 18), subject to mutual consent

All participants are encouraged to review legal documentation carefully and ask questions before proceeding.

FAQs

How long does the entire egg donation process take from application to collection?

The timing differs for the donor and recipient. For the patient, the entire process takes 5-10 weeks. The stages include online donor selection process, a meeting in the clinic for sperm collection and egg fertilization, embryo culture and freezing and PGT-A of embryos. The latter is optional; however, we highly recommend testing the embryos. For the donor, it is required to complete a screening first. The process usually takes 4-5 weeks.

Can donors continue normal activities after the donation cycle?

Reproductive technology used during donor egg IVF allows for very swift recovery. After donating eggs, donors can continue living a normal life with very few restrictions they are required to follow for several days. Bed rest isn’t required.

Does egg donation affect the donor’s future fertility?

The donor’s fertility isn’t at risk. A donation cycle should be viewed as a standard IVF protocol millions of women make early.

What emotional support is provided during the egg donation process?

Going ahead with donor eggs is often complicated. Some future parents want to avoid any disclosure of this fact. It can be achieved via careful blood type and phenotype matching. For others, sharing this information with their baby is a must. In this case, non-anonymous egg donation should be selected.
